I was assigned to design the folder for the Hemmings Muscle Machines sales kit.
The editors had already chosen the 6 cars they wanted used for the project. Beyond the compositional challenges of the piece, each car was sourced differently--Some were old slide scans from the 1990s, some were digital photos of varying resolutions, formats and quality. It goes without saying that lighting, framing and backgrounds were radically different, as was the white balance. Each car had to be knocked out and made to work as a part of the whole, with windows, reflections, and other details added to create a sense of believable context.
So the challenge was not only the design, but having to make the cars work together in terms of color, lighting and resolution and inhabiting the same space.
I tried a number of designs before hitting on this one, which everyone agreed was bold and suited to the theme at hand.
Finally, note: it printed gorgeously on heavy gloss stock, with the colors rich and glowing against the black background.
(The second photo is the entire folder, minus fold lines.)
